Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli

I’ve always been a bit of an animation junkie. While it seems a bit too obvious to say that I like Miyazaki’s films, it’s not every time I go to a foreign movie and forget to read subtitles because of visual beauty overload on screen. Spirited Away is one of just two movies to do that to me (the other is Pather Panchali) and it managed to capture much of the way I choose to view the world—making it an almost spiritual piece for me too.

I thoroughly enjoy the rest of Miyazaki’s work, in particular Kiki’s Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, and of course, My Neighbor Totoro (will they ever release it on DVD in Japanese?), all of which I would be up for watching pretty much anytime, anywhere. I also like some of the other Ghibli offerings such as Grave of the Fireflies but I haven’t liked some of them that much either.

I cruise past nausicaa.net fairly regularly to see what new stuff is coming out and to check what DVDs are scheduled to be released. They kept pushing back the release of Totoro, but it finally came out and made me very happy.
